Homo ergaster next to Australopithecus afarensis.
The first species with body proportions approaching modern humans: or the first tall, skinny desert-dwellers.
(I’ve probably already posted this, or something similar. And it probably didn’t even have the annoying water. But oh well. I wanted one of these right now.)
Homo ergaster is - in case the name is confusing you because you haven’t heard it and you thought you had a vague grasp of hominin species - what we’re now calling the African Homo erectus. Because having Homo erectus in Africa and Asia and spanning over several million years just didn’t seem quite fair.
Homo ergaster does tend to be smaller and more robust than Homo erectus. As one would expect from an older species.
And more Homo ergaster were more likely to be our ancestors than Homo erectus.

Faces of our Ancestors - Discovery News
“To put a human face on our ancestors, scientists from the Senckenberg Research Institute used sophisticated methods to form 27 model heads based on tiny bone fragments, teeth and skulls collected from across the globe…
Homo ergaster
The almost perfectly preserved skeleton of the “Turkana Boy” is one of the most spectacular discoveries in paleoanthropology. Judging from his anatomy, scientists believe this Homo ergaster was a tall youth about 13 to 15 years old.”
These faces are so amazing.
